EXTENSION OF THE PLATFORM DEDICATED TO EQUINE HEALTH AND BIOTECHNOLOGY IN SAINT-CONTEST

At our Saint-Contest site, the shared equine research biotechnology platform brings together a number of organisations including LABÉO, RESPE, Biotargen in addition to start-ups (Equiways, Equibiogenes, AIC…).
The project is aimed at building several tertiary spaces including offices, meeting rooms and an auditorium. This is supplemented by laboratories for Research activities but also for business activities in the shape of start-ups.

A WORLD-FIRST EQUINE CAMPUS PROJECT

Piloted by the Normandy Equin Valley joint association, this largescale development project will notably host the Equine Veterinary Teaching Hospital Complex (ChuvÉquin) of the Alfort National Veterinary School (EnvA). Normandy Regional Council will provide 30 million Euros and Calvados Departmental Council will provide 1.5 million Euros to finance this project. The Eperon fund for equine projects, the state and European funds will also be called upon. The campus is due to be opened in September 2023.

SITES

A CAMPUS, TWO RESEARCH AND TEACHING SITES AT THE SERVICE OF THE EQUINE SECTOR

As an international campus dedicated to equine health research, Normandy Equin Valley hosts world-renowned scientists on its two sites located in Calvados, Normandy.

 

These sites host researchers specialising in understanding, preventing, diagnosing and treating equine disorders. It will eventually also host students and businesses.

SAINT-CONTEST

At the Saint-Contest site, the platform specialises in equine health and biotechnology.

This shared platform hosts structures from a variety of backgrounds:

  • LABÉO, Normandy’s analysis and research hub;
  • BIOTARGEN, Caen Normandie University research unit;
  • RESPE, Equine Disorders Epidemiological Surveillance Network;
  • 3 start-ups, EQUIWAYS, EQUIBIOGENES and ANIMAL IMMUNE COMPANY respectively specialising in biosecurity, equine genetics and immunotherapy for the pathologies of the horse.

 

This site was inaugurated in 2016, with its extension due to be opened in 2022.

GOUSTRANVILLE

The historical site for equine health research in Calvados which was founded in 1986 when the Horse Disorder Institute and autopsy room were created, and it has continued to grow ever since.

 

Today, the site hosts 3 highly reputed bodies:

  • the Animal Health Laboratory, Normandy site, of the National Agency for Food, Environmental and Workplace Health and Safety (ANSES);
  • The Medical Imaging and Research Centre for Equine Locomotor Conditions (CIRALE), the Normandy equine hub of the Alfort National Veterinary School (EnvA);
  • the Horseracing Laboratory (LCH) of the National Horseracing Federation (FNCH) dedicated to fighting against animal doping.

FIELDS OF EXPERTISE

RESEARCH

Normandy Equin Valley is an internationally renowned hub of scientific skills, with the aim of understanding, preventing and improving the diagnosis and treatment of disorders and locomotor conditions that affect the health, wellbeing and performance levels of horses.

TRAINING AND LEARNING

A variety of courses are available (research-based courses, initial training for French veterinary students, continued and specialised training), as well as a mission to provide stakeholders in the equine sector and the general public with knowledge and information.

INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP

The pooling of knowledge and skills of the various teams present on the Normandy Equin Valley sites is a source of innovation and highly attractive for entrepreneurs.

 

Actions undertaken by Normandy Equin Valley partners, the Hippolia Competitivity Hub and the Normandy Economic Development Agency, helps to develop these innovations and increase the economic attractiveness of the sites.

Horses are taken in charge at CIRALE for examination by a team of specialist veterinarians using dedicated medical imaging equipment:

  • Locomotor disorders and poor performance
  • State-of-the-art equine health medical imaging
  • Sports assessment of competition horses
  • Physiotherapy and rehabilitation for horses


CLINICAL ACTIVITY

  • Real-time surveillance of equine diseases in France
  • Surveillance of equine causes of death
  • National and international reference activity
